This advanced course focuses on one of the most contemporary and important fields of EU law, especially in terms of number of cases brought before the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU). The course will offer highly practical insights and ensure a thorough understanding of the most delicate procedural aspects, the most relevant litigation strategies and applicable limitations to the judicial review of EU Sanctions before the CJEU. Specialised practitioners and experts will give participants an in-depth understanding of the technicalities of the judicial review of the legality of EU sanctions. Participants will additionally be immersed in concrete procedural and litigation strategies, so as to enhance the efficacy of participants’ own litigation choices.

What will you learn:

You will become acquainted with the procedural specificities of EU sanctions and the avenues open to contest their legality.

You will gain professional insights into several technical aspects of the action for annulment of EU sanctions initiated by individuals and their legal counsels. You will also enhance your knowledge on how to assess the relevance of an appeal against a decision of the General Court.

Grounds of review, the rules on legal standing and all other crucial aspects of the procedures available to challenge the legality of EU restrictive measures will be studied and clarified, granting you a comprehensive and detailed overview of the current judicial landscape.

Examples from case law will provide the starting point for discussions of issues pertaining to access to classified documents that might underlie given sanctions. Special focus will be given to the obligations weighing on the EU institutions and especially the Council.

Course methodology/highlights:

The course will be conducted by highly reputable legal experts who will discuss key topics, illustrated with examples and cases from litigation practice.

All presentations will be followed by interactive Q&A sessions. Group discussions throughout the course will provide enhanced learning opportunities.

The opportunity to interact with our experts aims to encourage an exchange of ideas, experiences and practices among our highly qualified participants themselves. In that spirit, participants could also benefit from opportunities to further develop their professional network.
