Abstract  
  		 Despite a similar historical legacy, social, and geopolitical conditions, the Czech Republic is more successful in tackling the decrease in fertility rate compared to Slovakia. It also has higher expenditures per inhabitant in the family policy area. The purpose of this paper is to explore the relationship between family policies and the fertility rate in Slovakia and the Czech Republic. To conceptualize and indicate the impact of family policies, the Family Policy Index developed by Miguel et al. (2019) is adapted and applied. They designed Family Policy Index following the gender equality principle. However, in this paper, the author neglects this principle and uses the index as an explanatory variable of temporal dynamics in fertility rate. According to Miguel et al. (2019), the composite variable is used, which consists of (1) financial costs of family policies; (2) length of maternity leave; and (3) a percentage of children entering an early childhood education. These are important sections of family policy according to the literature (ibid.; Barbos & Milovanska-Farrin gton, 2019; Gíslason, Eydal, eds., 2011). The index uses data by Eurostat from the 1999-2019 period. Three factors were weighted and the dataset normalised and aggregated in order to secure the explanatory value of the Index. The author assumes the Index positively related with the fertility rate so that the relation is stronger over time. Such findings could shape future family policies to be concentrated more on the financial incentives and other operationalised factors in the index in order to stimulate the fertility rate effectively.
