RELATION WITH THE PROFESSION

University of Latvia

Most students continue their studies in master’s PA programmes after receiving bachelor’s degrees in the administrative sciences. Almost all public administration master’s students work (the lectures are in the evenings and on Saturdays) in ministries, local governments, non-governmental organisations and the private sector. Approximately thirty-five percent of graduates find employment in the central administration within one to two years of completing their studies, and approximately twenty percent find employment in the sub-national administration.

The government regularly purchases research services from academic institutions. In 1999, for example, the Public Administration Reform Bureau funded academic institutions to prepare a project on the optimal distribution of the functions of central government, local governments, NGOs and the private sector.

Latvian University of Agriculture

Graduates of the bachelor’s and master’s programmes (sub-programmes) in regional development and administration and of the master’s programmes in the sociology of organisations and public administration are in demand by many local and regional government institutions. To date, the university has not been able to meet the labour market’s needs. Graduates are employed by the following institutions:

Approximately forty percent of those with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in regional development and administration find employment with the central administration, whereas sixty percent obtain employment in local and regional government. This distribution is largely due to the fact that most students come from rural municipalities.

The government purchases research services from the Latvian University of Agriculture and demand is increasing.
