Abstract

The EU’s opening towards citizens and civil society in the form of various consultation processes, interest representation and grants distribution has started the professionalization and Europeanization of civil society. Researchers suggest, the professionalized civil society organizations have been losing their ability to mobilize their members, leading to a “hollowing out” of these organizations. The academic literature is mainly concerned with assessing the extent to which social movements have been Europeanized and how that relates to the integration processes. There is limited literature examining how current social movements are linked to the organized civil society representing citizens’ interests at EU level.
The aim of this research is twofold: first, it aims to examine possible changes in patterns in the post euro-crisis European Union’ social movements, and will try to assess whether there are closely linked social movements at EU level. Secondly, the study will look at the main actors of movements and will try to assess the role of NGOs in forming European social movements. The quantitative study will use data regarding mass mobilization and its main actors retrieved from Global Database of Events, Language, and Tone (GDELT). We look at the events such as appeals, aid provision, demands and protests having actors as non-governmental organizations or non-governmental movements and their relationship to EU.
