Abstract

The BoardSource organization suggests a model of 'twelve principles of governance' which promote the idea of strategic leadership that assists the board of the Non-Governmental Organizations. This organization addresses these principles of governance for the NGOs so that any organization that could carry out these principles will perform appropriately, and these principles will improve leadership skills within the organizations. Here, the paper introduces some factors that may affect the application of these principles in real life because of the circumstances within the organization and the legal frame of the country in which these organizations operate. The author suggests that these good governance practices for Nonprofit Organizations are the key functions of the board and the executives, so the internal managerial structure could be the main factor that affects the application of these principles. Thus, the paper aims to explore the effect of these internal and external factors on to fulfill good governance and the practices used by local NGOs in Czech Republic. Furthermore, the purpose of this research is to understand current good governance practices applied in the Czech local non-profit organizations, explore how the organizational structure and the internal policies of the organizations, as well as, the external Legal frame governing the NGOs inside any country affect the application of the principles of governance. This research adapts a qualitative research methodology using a snowballing sample to conduct semi-structured interviews with the objective of including a diverse sample of NGOs in the Czech Republic. There are three interviews conducted with executive directors and manager within three organizations working in awareness about anti-corruption policies, social work and drug addiction, as well as community development in the Czech Republic. The findings of the research show that there are many internal and external factors that may affect the enforcement of the best practices of good governance for operating NPOs in the Czech Republic. Hence, the results show that the boards of the organizations oppose unique skills and capacities of management, operational, technical, and leadership to lead the staff and manage the organization. In addition, the organizations are applying most of the principles of good governance by using different tools and techniques in order to ensure transparency and accountability, as well as, to improve the relationship between the NPOs and state as well as the public.
