Institute for Comparative Law in Belgrade

The institute, founded in 1995, has performed the majority of research on comparative law in Belgrade and is one of the most reputable institutions of its kind in Southeastern Europe. At this time, there are twenty-three full-time researchers, of whom ten hold doctoral degrees. Most researchers were at least partially trained in the West.

Many projects conducted in the field of public administration and public policy at the sectoral level have had an impact on the country. Ongoing projects cover topics such as the organisation and mandates of public administration structures in Western and transition countries, which engages twenty-two researchers from the institute and the law school. Other relevant projects in the field of public law and political science include research on ombudsmen and on the status of universities in selected West European countries.

Institute for Legal and Social Sciences at Belgrade Law School

Under the "Establishing Serbia as Legal State" project (1996-2000), forty books were published, of which forty percent were in the fields of public law, social and political science and included a strong public administration dimension. The project involves thirty-eight researchers, and its most recent activity was a roundtable on the "Transformation of Law in Serbia and Slovakia" with researchers from Slovakia.

Centre for Independent Legal Studies in Belgrade

Ongoing research at the Centre for Independent Legal Studies in Belgrade is related to areas of public policy and public administration and is supported by the Open Society Institute and other international donors.

Alternative Academic Educational Network (AAEN)

The Alternative Academic Educational Network is a non-governmental, non-profit network of higher education programs and organisations, founded in August 1998, committed to promoting of quality and socially relevant higher education in Yugoslavia. AAEN’s mission is to provide additional and alternative education for young academics (students, faculty members) in order to raise academic standards in Yugoslavia and to empower new generations to carry out the transition processes towards the establishment of an open society, market economy, and political democracy.

One of the basic fields in which AAEN organises and executes educational programs is in public administration and local government, to be executed in the near future by the PALGO Centre, a member-organisation associated with AAEN.

The Regional Balkan Centre for Local Self-Management

The Regional Balkan Centre for Local Self-Management was established in Nis in 1996 and currently has seven countries as members. It has over fifty researchers concentrating on local management and urban development. It published five issues of the periodical Local Self-Management, and it organised an international gathering in Sofia, Bulgaria, in 1996, with participants from most Southeast European countries.

The European Centre for Peace and Development established by the United Nations (ECPD)

The ECPD is a research and training institution with affiliates throughout former Yugoslavia. It executes research and training in variety of courses, introducing European values, principles, standards and methods. Research at this time is concentrated on the Europeanisation of the legal system and institutions and organisation of training lawyers in Republika Srpska in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The centre has recently initiated activities to establish a new regional Institute for Public Administration.
