Presenter Abstract Changes in the field of healthcare in Slovenia from 1990 to 2010 show the real picture and the open issues within Slovenian healthcare. Inadequate capacity allocated for the implementation of medical treatment and problems at various levels of management and financing have caused new challenges in Slovenian healthcare. The paper shows us the picture of healthcare spending, public and private, the trends within factors of production, health sector management, financing system for healthcare and healthcare reforms. The main emphases are on the new data and changes from 2010 and on the future reforms in Slovenian healthcare system. The announced comprehensive reform of the healthcare system in 2011 would involve changing the system of health insurance, greater autonomy of health institutions and productivity payment. There are necessary changes in the law governing health care service to become more effective, more efficient, better quality and people friendly. Slovenia could reach that with strengthening primary healthcare activities, developing specialized centres, with greater mobility of health workers, establishing a quality system. Public-private partnership represents an important area in Slovenian health care, too. Experiences with mixed public-private health care system in Slovenia show a major shortcoming in the legislative regime in the field of granting concessions. Therefore, there is the need to an appropriate arrangement and uniformity of granting concessions. Slovenia needs an approach to healthcare that will ensure consistent provisions of services and financial sustainability.
