Presenter Abstract “Anti corruption agencies in Greece” Abstract Co-authors: Dr. Fani Komseli, Deputy Director of National School of Public Administration (National Centre of Public Administration) Dr. Georgia Kafantari, Research and Study Officer, Institute of Training (National Centre of Public Administration) The problem of how best to control corruption has challenged policymakers all of the world. Corruption is also closely linked with development and the efficiency of Public Administration. The response to the problem of corruption depends mostly on the culture and development level of the country. In European context during the recent decades the approach of choice has increasingly been to establish anti-corruption agencies. But this poses some questions concerning the following issues: - Authority and specific powers - The Agency size and jurisdiction - Expectations of the Agency - Efficiency and Accountability of its work In this paper, we review experiences with a wide range of agencies from Greece. In recent decades and in the framework of Administrative Reform, a number of Agencies has been established in central level providing a good example in the fight of corruption. Given the level of interest in centralized or single-agency approaches, our focus lies there. We also analyze existing documentation on greek anti-corruption agencies and present their impact on transparency and effectiveness on greek public administration. We aim to provide practical guidance in this area and supporting the vision for better public administration institutions within the European Union.
