Presenter Abstract This paper will explore co-ordination at the centre of government of Macedonia and its relation to functions and organization of the government office. A well-functioning government office acts as a coordinator of decision making system and as such is crucial for the government’s capacity to define and pursue its collective objectives. The ministries and government secretariat (government office) in the Republic of Macedonia do not seem fully understand the role they should be playing in the process of policy development, coordination, monitoring and evaluation. Yet on the other hand, in all Western democracies the government office is a guarantor of cohesive government policy in line with set government policies. The Government Office term borrowed from SIGMA papers refers to the institutions at the center of government responsible for supporting Prime Minister Office (PMO) and serving Council of Ministers as a collective decision-making body. The organization of the government office in Macedonia includes a combination of units each responsible for performing one or more of the co-ordination functions. Main units which the paper will focus exclusively, is the PMO and General Secretariat headed by a general secretary of the government. PMO is the political office that provides logistical and political support specifically to the Prime Minister. The General Secretariat (GS) of the government provides logistics and expert support to the Government, to the President of the Government, vice-presidents of the Government, and to the council of the ministers in ensuring high quality output from the council of ministers meetings. In all these activities of the government office the capacity for fully-fledge coordination is not yet operational.
