The Faculty of Social Sciences of Charles University is one of the most important academic institutions addressing European issues. Europe and related topics are covered in the basic programme in “Public and Social Policy” (e.g., European Social Policy), but also from a broader point of view. Since 1997, the faculty has offered a one-year in-service training programme (“Europeum”) targeted towards senior civil servants. The programme offers an in-depth analysis of EU integration processes in relation to candidate countries and is composed of three blocks: European Law, European Economic Integration and Social and Political Dimensions of European Integration. A master’s degree programme in European Studies was accredited in this faculty and will start from academic year 2000/2001.
There are also other faculties with similar “European” programmes, e.g., “the European Union” in Karvina. In general, the presence of European issues in Czech PA curricula may be result of several factors, including the position of the Czech Republic in the accession process, the geographic location of the country and established contacts with academic and other institutions in developed countries.
