Training course "Effective and Attractive Presentation”

November 7 – 11, 2011 / Bratislava, Slovakia

The NISPAcee training course "Effective and Attractive Presentation” took place in Bratislava, Slovak Republic on November 7-11, 2011. It was led by two Slovak trainers – Mr. Bohuš Biel and Mr. Ľuboš Hrivňák.

The main objective of the training was to develop participants' presentation skills and introduce them to different presentation techniques and tools.

The training programme was designed and tailored for ReSPA officials from the Western Balkan region. The group consisted of government officials, public administration civil servants and trainers, eager to learn new things. They were very active, cooperative and open to new inputs.

Special focus in the training programme was given to the differences between the various types of presentation; the essential components of a presentation; the time schedule for the preparation of a presentation and own presentation; the formula for effective presentation preparation, and the different approaches to the structure of the presentation and an analysis of the audience. Based on the request of the target audience, the training programme also consisted of presentations and exercises on team work skills.

All participants, prior to the training course, submitted a power point presentation. The trainers reviewed and analysed these presentations. In this way, the trainers had the opportunity to evaluate the presentation skills of the participants prior to the training and to tailor the programme to their specific needs. In the special training session, sample slides of each presentation were introduced and analysed by the trainers and trainees. The positive and negative components were analysed, together with the ways in which they could be improved by the trainees.

During the first day of training the participants identified their main presentation problems, for example: audience attention, managing discussions, being a good speaker, stage stress, motivation of the audience, nerves, eye contact, how to deal with problematic participants and how to present an unattractive topic. All these problems were covered and discussed by the trainees and trainers.

Within the programme there were also several presentation exercises. The participants had to develop their presentations individually or in teams. During the training period, the participants made visible improvements. Their presentations were improved in design, structure and visualisation. Body language, eye contact, voice, hand movements, the position of the speakers vis à vis the audience and work with both flipcharts and the screen was improved.

At the end of the training, the participants were awarded certificates. In addition, all participants received copies of a DVD with their individual video presentations and photos.
