Abstract

This presentation summarises results of questionnaires and interviews with students from University of Public Service who took part in the Hungarian National Cyber Challenge in 2019 and their opinion about implementing cybersecurity study material with gamification tools into their education.
With the growing significance of digitalization and IoT there are an increasing importance of security issues. At the same time taking the lead and set directions has an economic potential as well therefore countries can be motivated to invest into this field. According to the latest predictions there will be approximately 3,5 million unfilled cybersecurity jobs worldwide by 2021. These open possibilities have been appearing not just in the technical, but also in the strategic and policy expert area. Education institutions are not prepared to handle this growing need for experts both in human capacity and with the more and more sophisticated and up-to-date teaching materials and methodology.
In this paper our aim is to present a case study of a niche idea, a gamification-based, decision-making cyber security simulation and analyse its importance, and its possibilities to implement into the formal education in public service education.
The Hungarian National Cyber Challenge is an annual cyber policy and strategy competition, where – next to developing policy recommendations – IT technical challenges are involved as well. In 2019 there were 50% of the participated students from the University of Public Service in the semi-final, and all the three winning team came from that university with both military and public administration background.
Based on our empirical data participants suggest building in many knowledge and soft skill developing aspect of the Challenge to their former education, but on the other hand all agreed that competition itself should stay as a special talent development tool for the most motivated students.
